“A crown” is not one standardized product. The reason for the crown, the remaining tooth structure, the bite, the material, the laboratory process and the quality of the final adjustment all matter. Before comparing quotes, make the clinics describe the same thing.
First ask why the tooth needs a crown
A crown can restore a tooth that is badly broken, heavily restored, weakened, discolored or otherwise unsuitable for a simpler restoration. In some situations a crown follows root canal treatment; in others it is part of a bridge or larger reconstruction. The diagnosis should come before the material discussion.
Ask whether a more conservative restoration is reasonable. If the clinic recommends crowning many teeth, ask it to identify which teeth are structurally compromised and which are being changed primarily for appearance or bite design.
Material names are not enough
Ceramic and zirconia are broad families, not quality grades by themselves. Ask what the clinic is trying to optimize: strength, translucency, minimal thickness, masking a dark tooth, matching a front tooth, or managing a heavy bite. The answer should relate to your tooth and your bite rather than a universal claim that one material is “best.”
If a clinic uses a dental laboratory, ask whether the work is made in-house or externally, how shade information is communicated, and how remakes or major adjustments are handled. A lower quote that excludes a needed remake is not necessarily lower in the end.

Temporaries and bite checks matter
For many crown cases, the temporary restoration is part of protecting the prepared tooth while the definitive restoration is made. Ask whether it is included, how long you are expected to wear it, and what to do if it loosens while you are still in Medellín.
The final appointment should not be treated as a quick glue-in. Contact points, margins, bite and appearance need to be checked. If you are having multiple crowns, ask how the clinic evaluates your bite before you leave and what follow-up it expects once you are home.
Use a line-item crown quote
A useful crown quote identifies the tooth, diagnosis, material, whether root canal treatment or a post/core may be needed, temporary restoration, laboratory work, final cementation and follow-up. If the tooth’s prognosis is uncertain, ask for the alternative plan and cost if it cannot be restored.
That level of detail makes it possible to compare a Medellín quote with your home dentist’s plan without pretending that every “crown” line item is equivalent.

No single material is best for every tooth. Strength, aesthetics, available space, the opposing bite and the clinical situation all influence material selection.
Do I need a crown after every root canal?
Not every tooth is identical. The restoring dentist should evaluate remaining tooth structure, location, bite and fracture risk and explain the recommended restoration.
Should a crown quote include the temporary?
Ask explicitly. A quote should make clear whether temporaries, lab fees and follow-up adjustments are included.
Can I choose the material myself?
You can express preferences, but material selection should be a shared clinical decision based on the tooth and the treatment goals.
